چکیده

The low density hydrogen and helium in the IGM probed by QSO absorption lines is sensitive to the amplitude and spectral shape of the metagalactic UV background. We use realistic H I and He II Lyα forest spectra, constructed from state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of a ΛCDM Universe, to confirm the reliability of using line profile fitting techniques to infer the ratio of the metagalactic H I and He II ionization rates. We further show that the large spatial variations and the anti-correlation with H I absorber density observed in the ratio of the measured He II to H I column densities can be explained in a model where the H I ionization rate is dominated by the combined UV emission from young star forming galaxies and QSOs and the He II ionization rate is dominated by emission from QSOs only. In such a model the large fluctuations in the column density ratio are due to the small number of QSOs expected to contribute at any given point to the He II ionization rate. A significant contribution to UV emission at the He II photoelectric edge from hot gas in galaxies and galaxy groups would decrease the expected fluctuations in the column density ratio. Consequently, this model appears difficult to reconcile with the large increase in He II opacity fluctuations towards higher redshift. Our results further strengthen previous suggestions that observed He II Lyα forest spectra at z ∼ 2− 3.5 probe the tail end of the reionization of He II by QSOs.

The reheating and reionization history of the universe

We incorporate quasars into an analytic model to describe the reheating and reionization of the universe. In combination with a previous study of galaxies and Lyman-α clouds, we are able to provide a unified description of structure formation, verified against a large variety of observations. We also take into account the clumping of the baryonic gas in addition to the presence of collapsed obj...

Radiative effects by high-z UV radiation background: Implications for the future CMB polarization measurements

The radiative effects by high-redshift ultraviolet radiation background (UVB) heats the gas in the IGM and eliminate the neutral hydrogen and helium that dominate the cooling of the primordial gas. We investigate the role of the radiative effects for the temporal evolution of the reionization fraction by using cosmological Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. We find that the increa...

Wavelength and polarization variations of InAs/GaAs quantum dots emission at liquid Helium temperature via microphotoluminescence spectroscopy

In this paper, we investigate variation of the wavelength, intensity and polarization of the self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots emission by microphotoluminescence spectroscopy at the liquid helium temperature. The microcavity wafer sample is grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and chemically etched into the micropillar structure (with elliptical cross section - long and short axis 2µm×1.5µ...

THE IMPACT OF TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS ON THE Lyα FOREST POWER SPECTRUM

We explore the impact of spatial fluctuations in the intergalactic medium (IGM) temperature on the Lyα forest flux power spectrum near z ∼ 3. We develop a semi-analytic model to examine temperature fluctuations resulting from inhomogeneous HI and incomplete HeII reionizations. There are two main motivations for this investigation. First, detection of these fluctuations might provide insight int...
